Introduction to Winter Skills - 2 Days

Join us on Helvellyn in The Lake District for this one-day introduction to winter mountain skills. The day will be spent building on the skills you have developed on summer trips, we will equip you with the knowledge and ability to make safe decisions on how to enjoy Britain's Winter Mountains.

The core elements of this one-day course are basic winter navigation, the use of crampons and an ice axe, decision-making, safe route choice, and avalanche awareness.

What's involved:

Day 1

  • Understanding weather and avalanche risk
  • Route planning and winter navigation
  • Clothing, equipment, and Nutrition
  • Introduction to pacing and bearings
  • Kicking Steps
  • Use of Crampons and Ice Axe
  • Ice Axe Arrest

Day 2 - This is an opportunity to put your newfound skills to use, we will ask you to plan a day out and will give you the opportunity to lead, whilst being supervised by your instructor.

Who is the course for:

  • As a minimum, you should have summer hill walking experience
  • A basic understanding of how to use a map and compass in summer.
  • Be physically fit - able to enjoy 6 hrs out in the mountains in challenging conditions.
  • A willingness to learn

Course Information:

  • Instructor ratio 1:6 maximum
  • Minimum of 2 people for the course to run
  • The minimum age 14yrs, however, those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian

When does this course run?

These courses have 3 start days, Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday. For a course to run, we need a minimum of 2 people to book but will let you know a week in advance if a course won't run. You can book a single space.
