Mountain Skills Course - 2 and 4-Day Options in The Lake District - Keswick

Are you looking to enjoy Britain's mountains alone, to have the confidence to take friends and families out?

The two-day course will give you all the skills to be safe and enjoy those big days out. We’ll introduce you to the world of mountaineering and get you ready for your mountain adventures.

Our 2-day course will provide you with the basic skills to get out and about in the mountains with confidence, on our 4-day course we will take you on an expedition, spend the night camping in the mountains, and try some night navigation.

What does a Mountain Skills course cover?

  • Planning – how to successfully plan a walk in the mountains.
  • Weather – how it affects the mountains and your day out.
  • Walking skills – what can make life easier - pace, nutrition, movement skills, steep and technical ground.
  • Clothing and equipment
  • Mountain Navigation – everything from selecting a compass and using a map to navigate in poor visibility and an intro to GPS.
  • Hazards and emergency procedures in the mountains.
  • Emergency procedures.
  • Four-day courses - Days 3 and 4 we will leave the car parks behind and head out into the hills for 2 days with an overnight camp. You will need a tent, sleeping bag and mat as well as stove and food for this expedition.

Who is the Mountain Skills course for?

Mountain Skills courses are for anyone interested in exploring Britain's mountains, and you should be sufficiently fit enough to enjoy a full day in the hills.

When do we run this course?

This course runs in the third week of a month with start dates on Saturdays and Thursdays. Courses run from April to late November.

Courses start either on a Thursday or Saturday.

Where do we meet?

Our base for this course is the Youth Hostel in Keswick.
